AlvuSana: A transformative approach to horse gut health

AlvuSana's name comes from the latin words Alvus (gut) and Sana (health). Building on a decade of academic research on domestic and wild animal guts, AlvuSana has developed transformative tests for horse gut health. Founded as a University of Manchester spin-out, we are a team of academic and veterinary researchers committed to innovation, integrity and evidence-based approaches to horse gut health. Find out more about our team, our research and development and case studies.

Our cost effective, non-invasive immunological tests for inflammation and immune function, using a small amount of droppings, is based on the technology used to diagnose IBS, IBD and mucosal immune function in humans. To validate our approach in horses, we have assembled a proprietorial database of >1,000 gut profiles from horses with healthy, and not so healthy, guts. We then compare your horse’s profile with healthy baselines and those associated with clinical diagnoses. EquiGut profiles can then be used to identify gut-related performance or behavioural issues and to evaluate the impact of management and feeding practices on gut health.

Our services include our EquiGut MOT that provides a profile of your horse’s gut, either as a one off or as a cost effective subscription that additionally provides a trend analysis of gut health over time. EquiGut Optimise is an individually tailored evaluation of how changes to management, diet or supplements improve your horse’s gut health. Our analytical labs also evaluate parasite burden (EquiGut WormCheck) and microbiome dysbiosis (EquiGut Microbiome) to provide a truly holistic picture of gut health. Using these data, our RAMA qualified staff can work with you to optimise your horse’s management.

Look at some of our case studies to see how we can help you replace guess work with evidence-based management.

We welcome collaborative work with researchers, veterinarians and vet practices on managed and free ranging populations. Our tests can be used to corroborate suspected gut issues, monitor gut health after illness and treatment, evaluate veterinary interventions, or document how animal guts responds to environmental challenges.
